Why is Rwanda called the land of a thousand hills?: Rwanda is landlocked country just as its fellow other East African countries like Uganda and Burundi. It is found on the African continent in Eastern Africa and it is characterized by hilly and a mountainous terrain. Kigali is Rwanda’s capital known among the cleanest cities in the world and a country that flows milk and honey with beautiful women. Rwanda is a French speaking country after its colonial masters Germany and Belgium as well other languages such as English, Kinyarwanda, and Swahili. It was formerly known as “Ruanda” and during the year 1962 of 1st July, Rwanda gained her independence. Belgium, with UN granted full independence to Rwanda. The Germans and Belgium previously took over Rwanda because it put up less resistance than the rest of the other countries the Germans had colonized, however, it is believed and recorded that Gregoire Kayibanda (May 1 1924- Dec 15 1976) was the first elected president of Rwanda. He pioneered the Rwandese revolution and he led the Rwanda’s struggle for independence from Belgium and replaced the Tutsi monarchy with a republican form of government. The “land of a thousand hills” a direct translation from the French “pays des Mille Collines” a description for the flourishing country of Rwanda. Rwanda as a country became famous during the time of the “Genocide”, a war that took place within Rwanda between the two tribes the Tutsi and the Hutu in 1994. “The Kigali genocide memorial center” is a museum based in Rwanda in memories of the 1994 brutal war. However, Rwanda is known for Tea. In terms of Agriculture, it is famous for producing quality tea on the African continent as it is stated among the leading tea supplier countries in Africa. Rwanda is a hilly country and mountains like mount Karisimbi with a variety of hills and an altitude of 1700metres. Its relief is majorly divided into four broad categories: the central plateau, the lowlands of the East and the Bugarama plains, the Congo-Nile Ridge. The central and western part of the country is dominated by a portion of the Albertine Rift Mountains that give way to forests, savannah, plains and swamps as you move eastward.

Rwanda is a hilly and mountainous country, all crossed and covered by a multitude of hills and mountains locally referred to as cy’lmisozi Igihumbi in Kinyarwanda, a language spoken by the Rwandese. Rwanda as a country is endowed with physical beauties that cannot be spoken. It is seated on a hilly and mountainous land with 11 hills counted off around Kigali and 5 volcanoes of the 8 in the Virunga mountains namely, Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo, 23 lakes and numerous rivers some forming the source of the River Nile. The land offers a magnificent view as it is visible to everyone who gets to Rwanda compared to that of the Virunga Volcanoes in the bamboo forests.
The center of the country “Kigali” is encompassed with rolling hills all around the country. The Virunga mountains are a chain of volcanoes in East Africa. Rwanda is warmly known as the land of a thousand hills and mountains worldwide because of its hilly and mountainous physical natural beauty covering the land.
